For the past 26 years, Burnie Flower Gallery has been owned by Melissa Jackson, bought by her in the year 2000.
Born and raised in Ridgley, Melissa never realised that the standards set by her father and grandparents would help her form a strong constitution in her business. Discipline, high standards, etiquette, pride and a good work ethic helped her to stay grounded and grow her business. She also played sports and represented Tasmania as a runner, which prepared her for the hard work and commitment demanded in running a business.
Melissa completed a Diploma of Horticulture before gaining an apprenticeship as a floral designer in 1998. When the floristry business Burnie Flower Gallery came up for sale in 2000, Melissa bought it.
Burnie Flower Gallery has grown and changed, keeping up with the latest designs for weddings, funerals, birthdays, anniversaries and ‘just because’ flowers.
Melissa currently employs one staff member, Maria Coleman. Together, they work long hours to cover the needs of their customers. At busy periods, they call on family and friends to help with the workload. Melissa says she is grateful for all they do for her to get her through busy times.
Over the years, Melissa has expanded the business, buying the Burnie Flower Bowl and later The Bouquet Florist when each came up for sale. The three businesses run from her shop at shop 3 in the Centrepoint Arcade on Wilson Street, giving Melissa over 100 years of floristry history and trade names in the town of Burnie.
Melissa was involved in the former Burnie CBD promotions group, City Link, and Burnie Flower Gallery received several City Link awards, including City Link’s Best Presented Business award.
Melissa thanks her truly valued clientele and is grateful for their continued business support.
